The ruler markings along the edge of the outer handles were a modest but handy feature, aiding in small measurement tasks. The diamond-coated file was a handy tool to sharpen my blades on the go, a useful trait when out in the wild. Although I found the proprietary sized bits a tad inconvenient, the bit extender was a game-changer, allowing the use of standard ¼ inch bits. The Wave Plus houses not one, but two different bit drivers, a full-sized one, and a micro driver, perfect for those tiny screws on my eyeglasses. One feature that stood out was the bit drivers. The wire crimper just below the hinge of the plier handles proved to be a nifty addition, making wire crimping tasks a breeze. Having faced the annoyance of a small divot in my Curl’s cutters, the replaceable feature on the Wave Plus was nothing short of a blessing. The pliers, with their removable wire cutters, were a revelation. However, if I could, I’d replace the file with a more sturdy pair of scissors like the ones on the Surge, as I found myself missing the outside-accessible scissors especially when it came to snipping through thicker materials. The scissors, although not as robust as the one on the Surge, held their own against plastic, paper, and cardboard. I found the saw exceptionally useful for cutting through small limbs, although I did miss the swap-able saw/file implement from the Surge. The two 420HC knife blades, one flat and the other serrated, were a godsend during camping, easily tackling the routine cutting chores. The knife, saw, file, and scissors were the first to be put to the test. With 18 tools neatly packed into a 4-inch frame, I was akin to a kid in a candy store. Unfurling the Wave Plus revealed a plethora of tools that would make any camper grin. The 8-ounce mark indeed hits the sweet spot between utility and carry-ability, echoing my sentiment for a tool that’s there when I need it without being a burden. It’s only a tad heavier than the Curl but significantly lighter than the Surge, making it the perfect companion for my belt as I trail through rugged terrains. On receiving the Wave Plus, the first thing that caught my eye was its compact design. This is when I stumbled upon the Leatherman Wave Plus, and it seemed to tick nearly all the boxes for a hardcore outdoorsman like me. I was in the market for something less cumbersome than the Leatherman Surge I owned, yet more robust than the Curl. Having spent a fair share of time amidst the wilderness, a reliable multi-tool has always been an indispensable part of my gear. Both are full sized tools with lots of bells and whistles. For Leatherman that has to be the Wave+ and for Gerber the MP600. The best place to start when comparing two tool makers is with their flagship tools.
